MOD Statement Promised on Royal Marine Reserve Dundee Base

Dundee East MP Stewart Hosie was today promised a statement by the Secretary of State for Defence on the future of the Royal Marine Reserve base in Dundee after he raised the question of confusion arising from comment by the Prime Minister on the issue .

Raising the issue today with Leader of the House Sir George Young at Ministerial Questions, the SNP MP referred to the Prime Minister’s response to his Labour colleague in Dundee West yesterday when Mr Cameron said there was ‘no intention to cut the numbers of the Royal Marine Reserve in Scotland and indeed he wanted more people to join the reserve.’

Stewart Hosie said: “The facts seem to indicate a different story.

“The Greenock and Inverness detachments have already been closed and there is an intention to cull the number of regulars who service the Royal Marine and Royal Naval Reserves.

“There seems to be some confusion on this issue and I am aware of concerns over the position of the Dundee base  at Strathmore Avenue.

“I would ask for a statement from the Secretary of State for Defence to clear up the confusion and outline the future of the Royal Marine and Royal Naval Reserve.”

Responding for the UK Government, the Leader of the House promised to refer the matter to the Secretary of State for Defence to make a statement.
